Creativity, Writers Room and Whales

30 July 2024

A lightbulb, indicating a new idea.

Writers Room is a concept borrowed from the creative side of the television industry, and we use it in our Tectalic work culture.

In TV land, a group of writers gather and pitch ideas to each other. There may be food, laughter and teasing. In among the flow of ideas, a few gems will stand out. Those become scripts.

At Tectalic, we have a regular Writers Room. We move our focus from productivity to creativity for this hour each week. Typically, an account manager might describe a challenge or opportunity for a client.

Someone will have an idea or a question, and that’s where the conversation starts. We might take the idea and build on it using new technical tools or look at how we have tackled a similar issue for someone else.

We are a small team, each with specialty expertise, and when we’re around the table, we bring different skill sets, ages, experiences, and perspectives.

New ideas surface at our most creative and exciting sessions. These are the magic moments where curiosity and expertise come together, and conversation percolates the best of what we offer as a team. You can feel the excitement in the room as a great idea breeches like a whale. Boom!

Listening at the door, you’d hear things like;

Oh wow, I didn't know you could do that!

I love that. I can't wait to present this idea!

Not all aspects of Writers Room have come easy. The sheer volume of ideas presented is a challenge to some of our team. Details people, used to operating in a disciplined structure, can find this unstructured flow of ideas overwhelming at first.

Early comments included:

If we don't write all these ideas down, I feel we're wasting time.

"Who will follow up on these ideas? Who has the job to make this happen?"

Like many new habits, it gets easier over time. Good ideas are “sticky”. The right people pounce on them and take them to their accounts. Freed from operational pressure, the team now looks forward to Writers Room. It leaves us energised.

At its core, Writers Room combines strategic thinking with excitement. It is a critical part of being a digital agency because it keeps energy levels high. Our team is engaged and forward-looking. If something delights us, it will often delight our clients as well. Good ideas are a universal language.

Writers Room is our experiment bringing creativity into our work routine. It’s been an outstanding success. We’ve already unearthed some fantastic ideas for client websites, ad campaigns and content plans.

What do you think? Could Writers Room work for you? Would you enjoy the thrill of a whale breeching just next to you? It’s pure joy. I recommend it.
